Modern agricultural equipment design faces pressure to perform with maximum precision and reliability, while also standing up to the toughest environments in the field. Servo motors play a central role in the automation and modernization of precision agricultural equipment and robotics, enabling more advanced technology. When implemented correctly, this also can lead to lower cost of ownership.
To succeed in agriculture, servo solutions must do more than deliver performance, they must also withstand some of the harshest operating environments found in any industry.
Key Agricultural Applications of Servo Motors
With the right environmental protections in place, servo motors enable a new generation of intelligent, high-performance precision agriculture robotics and agricultural equipment.
Traction Systems
Servo motors are increasingly used in electric and hybrid tractors and autonomous vehicles. Their precise torque and speed control allow for smooth operation, improved energy efficiency, and better adaptation to varying terrain.
Battery voltages vary, and TruTech designs and produces motors for practically any voltage. From low voltages (12V, 24V, 48V, 72V) to high voltages (400V, 800V class), there is no voltage class that is out of reach.
Harvesting Robotics
Automated systems are reshaping harvesting, especially for high-value or delicate crops. Servo motors provide the precision needed for robotic arms and end-effectors to handle produce carefully and consistently.
With real-time feedback and fine motion control, these systems reduce crop damage, improve quality, and help address ongoing labor shortages in agriculture.
Smart Implements
Modern implements, such as planters, sprayers, and tillage systems, are becoming increasingly data driven. Servo motors enable precise, variable control of seeding rates, chemical application, and depth adjustments.
Precise control supports more sustainable farming practices by reducing waste and optimizing inputs.
Designing for Agricultural Environments
Before exploring specific applications, it’s important to understand unique environmental demands placed on precision robotics and their servo motors by agricultural industry applications. These conditions directly influence motor design, materials, and long-term reliability. TruTech has extensive experience designing and producing motors for these environments.
Ingress Protection
Agricultural equipment is constantly exposed to dust, dirt, water, and chemicals. High ingress protection ratings (IP65, IP67, IP69K, etc.) are essential to prevent contamination of internal components. Without proper sealing, the ingress of water or dust can cause internal components to bind or corrode. In the worst case, this can lead to catastrophic mechanical jams or electrical failures. Proper sealing (both at the motor and the connectors) ensures the motor’s internals are protected even during washdowns and in wet or submerged conditions.
Extreme Temperatures
From early spring planting to harvest heat, agricultural machinery is expected to perform across wide temperature ranges. It’s important to ensure that any motor that goes on a piece of equipment is designed to handle these fluctuations.
- Hot ambient temperatures (40C to 70C+) cause the motor’s windings to reach a higher temperature when performing the same amount of work. It’s important to ensure that the motor can meet the torque requirements of the application outside laboratory conditions. Some feedback devices like magnetic encoders and resolvers are also more well suited to these temperatures than others.
- Cold ambient temperatures (-40C to -20C) present unique challenges for servo motors, but these challenges can be overcome. Proper material and adhesive selection allows motors to perform in these temperatures without risking degradation.
Protective Coatings
In addition to heavy rain, chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides can accelerate corrosion. Specialized coatings, including hard-coat anodized finishes or chemically resistant epoxy paints, protect motor surfaces and extend operational life in these aggressive environments.
Shaping the Future of Agriculture Robotics
Servo motors are a key enabler of precision agriculture robotics. By combining durability with advanced control capabilities, they allow manufacturers to build equipment that is not only tougher and smarter, but also lower cost of ownership.
At TruTech, we design servo motors and systems that meet the real-world demands of agriculture, helping OEMs and operators push the boundaries of efficiency, automation, and performance.
